The Bark Sigyn is the last three-masted wooden sailing ship that was built as a merchant ship and is still load- bearing. It was named after the giantess Sigyn from Nordic mythology . Her name means bringer of victory.

It was built in Gothenburg , Sweden in 1887 to haul lumber. She sailed under the Swedish flag until the First World War. In December 1913, however, the ship was so badly damaged in a storm that it was no longer seaworthy. It was then repaired and converted into a schooner bark in order to reduce costs during ongoing operations.

In 1927 the Sigyn was first sold to the island municipality of Vårdö and later to Åbo Akademi to be converted into a museum ship . In the 1970s it was completely refurbished because the hull was damaged. In 1979 she got her original rigging back as a barque. After further repairs were made between 1998 and 2001, it was moved to its current location on the banks of the Aurajoki in the port of Turku .
