Siha is a district in the Kilimanjaro region in northeastern Tanzania with the administrative headquarters in Sanya Juu . It borders the Arusha region to the west and north, the Rombo district to the northeast and the Hai district to the southeast and south .

geography

The district has a size of 1158 square kilometers and around 116,000 inhabitants (as of 2012). The area is divided into three agro-ecological zones: the lowlands up to an altitude of 1500 meters above sea level, the highlands that adjoin it and reach up to 3000 meters above sea level, and the forest, which is over 3000 meters above sea level. The climate depends heavily on the altitude. In the south, at an altitude of around a thousand meters, it is warm and temperate, Cfa according to the effective climate classification . It rains over 1000 millimeters per year, and there is precipitation even in the driest months from July to September. The average temperature is 20 degrees Celsius.

Siha District was founded in 2007 by splitting off from Hai District.

population

The population increased from 89,214 in 2002 to 116,313 in 2012. This corresponds to an annual growth of 2.7 percent and a doubling time of 26 years. During this period, literacy rose from 78 to 85 percent.

Facilities and services

  • Education: Of the 60 primary schools, 6 are private schools. Two thirds of the 19 secondary schools are public schools (as of 2019).
  • Health: There are two hospitals, five health centers and 14 pharmacies for the medical care of the population.
  • Water: In 2017, 86 percent of the population had access to clean water.

Economy and Infrastructure

The majority of the population works in agriculture.

  • Agriculture: Most of the land under the forest zone is suitable for agriculture. The most important foods for personal consumption are beans, corn, potatoes, peas, bananas and vegetables. Coffee, wheat and fruit are grown for sale (as of 2018). Of the 27,000 households in the district, 15,000 kept livestock, mostly chickens, cattle and goats.
  • Forestry: In 2012, 689,000 trees were planted in the district with the help of a United Nations program in order to preserve the water reserves.
  • Road: The T2 national road runs through the southernmost part of the district from Moshi to Arusha.

Nature reserves, sights

  • Kilimanjaro National Park : Siha, with its forest zone in the northeast, is part of the 1668 square kilometer national park.

Others

The Wernberg Missionary Monastery in Carinthia in Austria has had a partnership with the name Friend of Sanya Juu for 25 years. A secondary school was established in 2000 and expanded to eight classes by 2010.
