The silver banded pigeon ( Columba jouyi ), also known as the riu-kiu dove , is an extinct species of pigeon that was endemic to the dense forests of the Ryūkyū (outdated: Riukiu) chain of islands . The specific epithet refers to the ornithologist and bird collector Pierre Louis Jouy.

description

The silver ribbon pigeon reached a length of 45 centimeters. The plumage was generally slate black. The head, neck, upper back and flanks had a purple sheen. The lower back had a metallic green sheen. A light gray crescent-shaped ribbon ran across the shoulders. The feet were purple. The beak was green-blue with a light tip.

distribution

The spread extended to several islands of the Ryūkyū island chain, including Iheya-jima , Izena-jima , Okinawa Hontō , Yagaji-jima, Kerama Islands , Zamami-jima and Ie-jima as well as Kita-daitō and Minami-daitō in the Daitō -Islands .

Way of life

Information about their way of life is not known. Comparisons with their living relatives suggest that they ate fruits, seeds, buds and new shoots.

die out

As a result of habitat destruction, overhunting and stalking by invasive predators, the species had already disappeared from Okinawa Hontō in 1904 . It was last collected on the Daitō Islands in 1936. During an expedition in 1945 it could no longer be proven. The type specimen from 1887 is in the National Museum of Nature and Science in Tokyo, three more specimens are kept in the Yamashina Institute for Ornithology.
