The silver lacquer crocus ( Crocus versicolor ) is a type of plant from the genus of the crocuses ( Crocus ).

The silver lacquer crocus is a perennial tuber geophyte that reaches heights of 5 to 9 centimeters. The leaves are 1.5 to 3 millimeters wide, gray-green and less long than the flowers . The throat is usually pale yellow. The flowers are fragrant. The perigone measure 25 to 35 (rarely up to 40) × 7 to 11 millimeters. The anthers are as long as the stamens.

The flowering period extends from March to April.

Occurrence

The silver lacquer crocus occurs in north-west Italy and in south-east France in the Alpes-Maritimes, Hautes-Alpes and Var departments. The species grows in garrigues as well as open pine and deciduous forests on limestone at altitudes of 100 to 1600 meters.

use

The silver lacquer crocus is rarely used as an ornamental plant for rock gardens. The species has been in culture since 1574 at the latest. The most cultivated variety is 'Picturatus' with white tepals that have 3 purple stripes on the outside.

Diseases

The rust fungus Puccinia croci attacks the silver lacquer crocus and used to occur in Central Europe in the Jura, but is currently lost.
