Siliana ( Arabic سليانة ) is aTunisiancity with around 25,000 inhabitants,made up of twodelegations(Siliana Nord and Siliana Sud); the total population of the two delegations is around 60,000. Siliana is the capital ofthe governorate ofthesame name.
location
Siliana is located in northern Tunisia at an altitude of about 430 m above sea level. d. M. located almost 130 km southwest of the capital Tunis . Kairouan is about 100 km to the south-east.
economy
Agriculture traditionally plays the most important role in the economic life of the population. Over time, however, urban handicrafts, trade and the service sector also developed into notable economic factors. Despite these developments, the city suffers from high unemployment.
history
Siliana was founded in 1910 as a small settlement around an agricultural weekly market ( Suq ) and received the status of a municipality on September 6, 1945.
The place also gained notoriety outside the country as the center of the poverty protests in Tunisia at the end of November / beginning of December 2012. The demonstrations in the area, which the police tried to suppress with violence, claimed at least 200 people injured and were directed against the current governor, who was accused of corruption as well as against poverty and unemployment in the region.

The Roman city of Mactaris is located about 35 km southwest.
Others
The ancient Zama , site of the famous decisive battle (202 BC) between the Carthaginian troops led by Hannibal and the Romans led by Publius Cornelius Scipio Africanus , is only about 10 km northwest of today's town of Jama .
