Silvan Omerzu

Silvan Omerzu (* 1955 in Brestanica , Yugoslavia ) is a Slovenian director, puppeteer and illustrator.

Life

After studying at the Pedagogical Academy in Ljubljana , he started working at the Ljubljana Puppet Theater. In 1983 he received a scholarship to study in Prague , where he specialized in marionette and puppet making.

In 1993 Omerzu founded the Konj Puppet Theater in Ljubljana, of which he is still director today.

Omerzu exhibited his work in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Slovenia and abroad and was involved in numerous performances. Lately Omerzu has been working on spatial installations such as the exhibition Tears 2006 in the church of the Franciscan monastery in Kostanjevica na Krki and exhibitions in the galleries La Bellone in Brussels (2007) and Kazemate in the castle of Ljubljana (2007 and 2010). He staged another exhibition entitled Automatons in KiBela in Maribor (2008) and the room installation Round Tables (2009) at the International Center of Graphic Arts (Mednarodni Grafični Likovni Center, MGLC) in Ljubljana.

He has directed a series of performances at the Mladinski Theater in Ljubljana, namely Kleist (2006), The House of Our Lady by Ivan Cankar (2008) and A Tower by Ivo Svetina (2011). Omerzu also directed the shows Forbidden Loves (2009) based on ancient motifs at the Ljubljana Puppet Theater, Salto Mortale (premiered in May 2012) at the Maribor Puppet Theater and You Catch! by Saša Eržen in the Ljubljana Puppet Theater (premiere in November 2012).

For the film Krabat - Master of the Black Mill , an international co-production from 2014 with the participation of the Ljubljana Puppet Theater, Omerzu designed the set and puppets.

During his career, Omerzu was also involved in book illustration. From 1994 to 2013 he illustrated 17 books for a number of publishers, while working permanently for the two literary magazines for children, Cicido and Ciciban .

He has received 13 international and 12 Slovenian awards for his work.
