The Faro de Cabo Polonio is a lighthouse ( Faro in Spanish ) in Uruguay . It is in Cabo Polonio , a small fishing and seaside resort in the Rocha department .
description
The building was built according to the plans of Faro de José Ignacio at the tip of the small cape ( Cabo in Spanish ). It consists of the 25.9 meter high round tower made of clinker bricks and a single- story residential building for the beacon keepers . The beacon was put into operation in 1881. It is used for orientation in this demanding sea area, which is characterized by the Islas de Torres archipelago and shallows .
The beacon has a fire height of 39.9 meters and shows a white flash as an identifier with a return of 12 seconds (Fl.W.12s). The range is 22 nautical miles.
The Faro de Cabo Polonio was declared a national monument ( Spanish Monumento de Uruguay ) in 1976 . It is still manned and can be viewed and climbed on certain days.
Trivia
