Silvia von Steinsdorff

Silvia von Steinsdorff is a German political scientist and university professor . Since 2009 she has held the professorship for "Comparative Research on Democracy and the Political Systems of Eastern Europe" at the Institute for Social Sciences at the Humboldt University in Berlin .

Life

Silvia von Steinsdorff graduated from the Wittelsbacher Gymnasium in Munich in 1985 and began her dual studies in journalism , political science , public law , sociology and Slavic studies at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich in the same year . She completed her studies in 1990. In 1993 she presented her dissertation there with the title " Russia on the way to freedom of expression: the pluralization of the Russian press between 1985 and 1993 ", which was awarded "summa cum laude". From 1992 to 2000 she was a research assistant at the chair for the political systems of Eastern Europe under Margareta Mommsen at the Munich University . In 2001 she completed her habilitation and received her qualification to teach political science. In the same year she took on her first substitute professorship at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg for "Government Theory and Policy Research". From 2003 to 2006 she was visiting professor at the Humboldt University in Berlin for "Comparative Analysis of the Political System, Comparative Studies in Eastern Europe". Since 2009 she has been Professor of Comparative Democracy Research and the Political Systems of Eastern Europe at the Humboldt University. In October 2017 she was a guest researcher at Princeton University and in March 2020 she was a visiting professor at the Université Paris 1 Panthéon Sorbonne .

Silvia von Steinsdorff's work focuses on the area of ​​tension between law and politics and deals in particular with constitutional courts and constitutional politics. She also deals with parliaments, parties, democratization and the transformation of political systems. Their geographical focus is there in Eastern Europe and Turkey .

Steinsdorff has been a member of the German Society for Eastern European Studies since 1998 . Since 1996 she has been a member of the German Association for Political Science (today: German Association for Political Science). Since 2013 she has been a member of the "Politics and Law" working group in the latter.
