Silvio Nido

Silvio Nido (* 1905 in Gossau SG ; † August 25, 1974 in Zurich ) was a Swiss athlete who was successful as a hammer thrower .

Life

Nido was a member of the LC Zurich . He was Swiss champion in hammer throwing in 1936, 1938, 1939 and 1943. At the European Athletics Championships in Paris in 1938 , he was sixth. On May 4, 1939, he set a Swiss record in Zurich of 50.265 m that lasted for twelve years.

Nido, who was also active in the sports of swimming, water polo and ice hockey and worked as a youth coach at FC Zurich , was a committed sports sponsor. After no Zurich athlete was able to qualify for the sports finals of the Swiss Athletics Championships in 1950 , he initiated a commission at LC Zurich, which in 1951 organized the “ De schnällscht Zürihegel ” (Zürihegellauf) school sprint competition for the first time , which is still held today .

For his services, he was named “Sports Sponsor of the Year” at the “Swiss Sports Awards” in 1971 and was honored as a “Sports Pioneer” in 1972 by the Association of Swiss Sports Journalists (VSSJ). He was also an honorary member of the Swiss Athletics Association (SLV).

Silvio Nido died of a heart attack on the way to work. Most recently, he ran a kiosk at Central near Zurich's train station .
