Simdega is a city in the Indian state of Jharkhand .

The city is the capital of the Simdega district of the same name . Simdega is administered as a Nagar Panchayat . The city is divided into 18 wards (constituencies).

history

Historically, the area was ruled by the Gajapati kings of the Gajapati Kingdom of Kalinga for centuries . The region is culturally an amalgamation of indigenous and Odia cultures. The influence of the Odia culture is significant in the region and in the population. The region also had historical ties to Emperor Ashoka and Buddhism , as evidenced by archaeological finds in the region.

Demographics

The city's population is 42,944 according to the 2011 census. Khunti has a gender ratio of 962 women per 1000 men and thus a male surplus that is usual for India. The literacy rate was 85.5% in 2011. Almost 41% of the population are Hindus , approx. 38% are Christians , approx. 16% are Muslims and approx. 5% belong to another or no religion. Children under 6 years of age are 12.6% of the population. 46.4% of the population are Scheduled Tribes .

economy

Much of Simdega's economy is primarily based on agriculture and related activities such as shellac production and animal husbandry and aquaculture. The area has livestock farms for poultry, emu, ducks and pigs. The main crops grown in Simdega are rice, corn and peanuts.

education

There are several missionary schools and Christian educational institutions in the city.
