Sime Silverman
Simon J. "Sime" Silverman (born May 19, 1873 in Cortland , New York , † September 23, 1933 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American newspaper publisher . He was best known as the founder and editor-in-chief of Variety , one of the most important trade journals in the entertainment industry .
Life
Silverman was born in Cortland, New York, in 1873, the third child of Louis and Rachel (née Ganz) Silverman. He attended Grammar School in Cortland and Syracuse .
He began his career in the newspaper industry in 1903, initially as a vaudeville critic for Daily America . He then worked for the Telegraph , which he had to leave after criticizing an advertiser's show as "no good". As a result, he founded his own paper Variety in New York in 1905 , which initially reported on vaudeville shows, the circus and other forms of entertainment. After strong growth, the newspaper moved from Broadway to Times Square in 1909 .
In 1933, Sime Silverman, already seriously ill with tuberculosis, founded the Hollywood- based Daily Variety. The first issue appeared on September 6th. Two weeks later he died of complications from the disease in his suite at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles . The memorial service took place in the Temple Emanu El .
Silverman was married to Harriet "Hattie" Freeman since 1889. From the marriage, the son Sidne "Skigie" Silverman (1901-1950) emerged, who continued Variety after the death of his father. After Sidne died of tuberculosis in 1950, Sime Silverman's grandson Syd Silverman (* 1932) took over the paper, with Harold Erichs' guardian running the business from 1950 to 1956.
