The Simeonstiftplatz is a square in the center of Trier . Simeonstiftstrasse (today's Kutzbachstrasse ) led to the square .

history

The square and street are named after the Simeonstift adjoining the square , which today houses the Simeonstift Museum. This in turn is named after Simeon von Trier , in honor of which Archbishop Poppo von Trier built it.

The Simeonstiftplatz was officially called “Ludwig-Christ-Platz” from 1943 to 1945, named after the NSDAP politician Ludwig Christ , who was Mayor of Trier from 1933 to 1938.

In 2005, parts of the Roman city wall were discovered during construction work. The area in question is located in the grounds of the Simeonstift Museum and is therefore preserved as a museum.

The square has been car-free since November 2009. Previously it was used as a parking lot, mainly for coaches. Renewed abuse as a parking lot is prevented with bollards .

Karl Marx statue

To mark the 200th birthday of Karl Marx , a statue of the city's famous son was unveiled on May 5, 2018 . The five meters fifty - an allusion to his date of birth on May 5th (month and day) - high bronze statue by the artist Wu Weishan is a gift from the People's Republic of China .

Cultural monuments

In addition to the monastery that gives it its name, there is also the former monastery curia, which is a two-storey plastered eaves building from 1741. The Porta Nigra is also located in the immediate vicinity of the square .
