Simin Palay

Simin Palay (* 1874 in Casteide-Doat , Département Pyrénées-Atlantiques ; † 1965 in Gelos , Pyrénées-Atlantiques) was a French writer of the Occitan language , Romanist , Occitanist and lexicographer .

life and work

Maximin Palay, called Simin Palay, wrote numerous works in all literary genres as an autodidact in the Gascon language of his homeland. He was co-founder of Escòle Gaston Febus and from 1923 its director. He was Majoral des Félibrige (1920) and Knight of the Legion of Honor . His bust is in Pau .

Palay's dictionary is significant: Dictionnaire du béarnais et du gascon modern (bassin de l'Adour), embrassant les dialectes du Béarn, de la Bigorre, du Gers, des Landes et de la Gascogne maritime .
