Simion Stanciu , pseudonym: Syrinx , (born December 23, 1949 in Bucharest ; † July 6, 2010 in Geneva ) was a Romanian pan flutist and composer who lived and worked in Switzerland .

Simion Stanciu was born into a family of musicians. His father was a cellist, his brothers are also instrumentalists. He initially studied violin at the Conservatory in Bucharest , but at the age of 14 he devoted himself increasingly to playing the panpipe . Due to his training in classical music, he was able to develop a new repertoire for the instrument, which had previously only played a role in the folklore of different countries and in popular music. He chose his stage name, which in Greek mythology not only denotes the nymph Syrinx , but also the panpipe itself. His album Concert de Noël / Christmas concert achieved gold status in Switzerland in 1991 .

Stancius' repertoire ranged from baroque and classical instrumental concerts (Vivaldi, Bach, Mozart, etc.) in arrangements for pan flute to collaborations with rock music groups such as The Moody Blues or Yes to recordings in the field of jazz and popular music . He also played the soundtrack for the movie In the Beginning was the fire .

Stanciu founded the Panflute School Akademie Syrinx .
