Simon Chapman
Simon Fenton Chapman (* 1951 in Bowral , New South Wales ) is an Australian medical doctor and professor of public health at the University of Sydney . He is best known for his work on the dangers of tobacco consumption and his work against tobacco smoking .
academic career
Chapman studied sociology , psychology , philosophy and English at the University of New South Wales and earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1972. In 1977 he obtained a master’s degree with a later excellent thesis on "Advertising and psychotropic drugs - the place of myth in ideological reproduction". In 1984 he received his doctorate in medicine on "Cigarette advertising as myth: a re-evaluation of the relationship of advertising to smoking" at the University of Sydney. Since January 2000 he has been Professor of Public Health there.
Chapman's work focuses on research into cancer , obesity , diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular diseases , healthy aging and modern health panics. His research on tobacco consumption and its health risks were of particular importance.
As of June 2018, Chapman has written over 520 publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals as well as 21 books or detailed reports. His h-index at this point was 59.
He is also the emeritus editor of the scientific journal Tobacco Control .
