Sir Simon Michael Schama , CBE (born February 13, 1945 in London ) is a British historian.

Live and act

Simon Schama comes from a family of Eastern European Jewish immigrants. He studied history at Cambridge . From 1966 to 1976 he was a fellow at Christ's College .

From 1976 to 1980 he was a Fellow and lecturer in Modern History at Brasenose College of Oxford University . From 1980 to 1993 he was Professor of History, Mellon Professor of the Social Sciences and William Kenan Professor of the Humanities at Harvard and Senior Associate of the Center for European Studies . He has taught at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales and was a Trevelyan Lecturer at Cambridge and Tanner Lecturer at both Oxford (through Rubens and Rembrandt ) and Harvard. He is Professor of Art History at Columbia University , New York.

In 1988 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . In 2001 he gave the Finzi Contini lecture at Yale on English History: In Defense of the Epic and in June 2002 he was the Phi Beta Kappa speaker at Harvard ( The Fate of Eloquence in the Age of the Osbournes , reprinted in The New Republic ). The British Academy elected him a member in 2015.

Schama's A History of Britain was also made into a documentary and broadcast in six parts by the BBC between 2000 and 2002 , presenting the history of Britain itself in numerous historical locations. The full series is also available on six DVDs.

The book The American Future deals, among other things, with the role of German immigrants, which has been assessed very differently over time, and with the attitude of Americans towards immigration in general.
