Simon & Schuster Inc. is a New York- based American holding company and publishing group for book publishers and imprints . It has been part of the CBS Corporation since 2006 . Simon & Schuster is also the name of one of the publishing group's imprints.

History and program

The publishing house was founded on January 2, 1924 by Richard L. Simon and Max Lincoln Schuster . Their first publication, which was delivered on April 10th of the same year, was a crossword puzzle book with a pencil. The publishers initially had great success with such puzzle books, but over time they transformed into a renowned book publisher with a wide range of products.

The aggressive advertising and new marketing strategies were also reflected in commercial success. S&S was the first publishing house to also reimburse booksellers for unsold returns . In 1939 he was the first American publisher to bring paperback books to market. The Pocket Books subsidiary was set up specifically for this purpose . The innovation triggered a revolution in the book trade.

In 1944 the department store magnate Marshall Field bought the publishing house, but after his death in 1957 the founders Simon and Schuster bought the company back with the investors Leon Shimkin and James M. Jacobson. In 1958 the young Michael Korda started working for the publishing house. In the following years he rose to the position of chief editor and held this position until 2006.

In 1975 it was sold to the conglomerate Gulf + Western and expanded steadily through the acquisition of numerous small publishers. In 1994, the conglomerate, now trading as Paramount Communications, was bought by the media group Viacom , which was split up into the two new groups CBS Corporation (the legal successor to the old Viacom) and Viacom (a new company that continued to use the old name) on January 1, 2006 . Simon & Schuster has belonged to the CBS Corporation since the split.

The publisher and its offshoots publish around 2000 book titles each year. In 2000, S&S made a name for itself when it published Stephen King's Riding the Bullet as e-text only .
