Simon de Passe , also: van de Pas, Pass (* around 1595 ; † May 6, 1647 in Copenhagen , Denmark ) was an engraver and medalist specializing in portraits .

Live and act

Simon van de Passe was the second son of Crispin de Passe the Elder , from whom he was trained, and brother of Crispin the Younger , Willem and Magdalena . Until 1616 he worked with his father in Utrecht. His first prints date from around 1612. They were two plates in the Hollstein series 231ad and 232ad, published by his father in Utrecht. From 1615 to 1622 he stayed in London and made professional portraits for the publisher Compton Holland. From 1617 he had his records relocated to Sudbury & Humble . Franken suspects that he stabbed a sheet for the Manège Royal while visiting his brother Crispin de Passe the younger .

From 1624 Simon lived in Copenhagen , where from 1631 he was appointed royal copper engraver by Christian IV of Denmark and Norway . In Denmark he made a series of 84 plates on the country's history, called The Kronberg Series.

Simon was an expert in portrait engraving and the pioneer of a new type of ear frame. Around 1615/18 he developed a method of serial production of the engraved oval portraits. These were not intended for printing and instead were used like medals.
