Simonetta Di Pippo (born June 30, 1959 in Rome ) is an Italian astrophysicist and has been Director of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) since 2014 .

biography

Simonetta Di Pippo studied astrophysics at La Sapienza University in Rome and graduated in 1984 with an M.Sc. from. In 1986 she went to the Italian space agency Agenzia Spaziale Italiana (ASI) in Rome. She worked in the fields of earth observation , automation , robotics and manned space travel . In 2002 she took over the management of the ASI space observatory . From 2008 to 2011 Di Pippo was Director of Space at the European Space Agency (ESA) before returning to ASI and until 2014 headed the European Space Policy Observatory at ASI-Brussels.

In June 2009, Di Pippo and Claudia Kessler founded the organization "Women in Aerospace Europe" (WIA-E) with the aim of promoting diversity in the space sector, and is now its honorary president.

In March 2014, Simonetta Di Pippo was appointed Director of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA). Her tasks include the definition of the strategy and the policy of the office, based on the specifications of the UN General Assembly , the exchange with the Committee for the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) as well as advising the UN Secretary General and the Director General of the UN Offices in Vienna (UNOV). The focus of the work is the use of space science and technology for sustainable development and the reduction of the risks of disasters.

Since 2015 she has been leading a study "Public / Private Human Access to Space" at the IAA, which deals with future commercial manned space travel.

She is a member and chairman of international specialist congresses and juries and lectures at various universities, including the George Washington University in Washington, DC and the Libera Università Internazionale degli Studi Sociali in Rome.
