The Simpelejärvi is a lake on the Finnish - Russian border. The lake is almost entirely in the South Karelia landscape . Only one side bay protrudes into the Republic of Karelia .
The 88.21 km² large lake lies between the first and second Salpausselkä ridge at an altitude of 68.8 m. Parikkala is located on the shore . The lake flows across the sound Kivijärvensalmi the southern small Nachbarsee Kivijarvi from which the river Hiitolanjoki to Lake Ladoga is drained.
