The Hiitolanjoki (also Kokkolanjoki , Russian Кокколанйоки ) is a river in Finland and Russia .
The Hiitolanjoki forms the outflow of the Kivijärvi , which in turn is connected to Simpelejärvi in the north by a sound . It flows in an easterly direction and passes the municipality of Rautjärvi . Then, after just four kilometers of the river, it leaves the Finnish South Karelia and crosses the Russian border. It now flows southeast through the Republic of Karelia and past Hiitola . Opposite the island of Kilpola off the lakeshore , the Hiitolanjoki finally flows into Lake Ladoga after 49 km .
The catchment area covers 1415 km², of which 1029 km² are in Finland.
On the Finnish side there are four hydropower plants ( Kangaskoski , Lahnasenkoski , Ritakoski and Juvankoski ) with a total output of 2.5 MW .
