The simultaneous church of St. Philipp and Jakob is a house of worship in Vogelbach (Palatinate). The Romanesque hall building in the style of the Worms school was built in the 12th century. Its octagonal late Gothic tower characterizes the townscape.
history
The church was built in 1131 at the instigation of Counts Friedrich von Saar Werden and Dietrich von Homburg and established as a hospital church in 1150 . It was under the Cistercian monastery of Wörschweiler since the 13th century .
Furnishing
In addition to late Romanesque components (dome-shaped vaulted apse, recessed choir, nave plinth, west portal), it also contains late Gothic (sacrament houses, ribbed vaults in the choir, tracery windows on the south side of the choir, octagonal tower in the southwest corner, baptismal font), baroque and modern style elements .
meaning
The church is one of the oldest architectural monuments in the Palatinate and was used for contemplation and rest as well as nursing. Already in the Middle Ages it was a starting point for pilgrims who crossed the Palatinate via the northern route of the Palatinate Way of St. James on the way to Santiago de Compostela to the tomb of St. James in Spain . The patrons of the church, the apostles Philip and James, who are also the patrons of the cathedral in Santiago, indicate the importance of this period . From 1672 it served as a simultaneous church for both denominations as a place of worship.
Since 1986 the church has been a protected cultural asset under the Hague Convention .
