Sinclair Island ( Spanish Isla Sinclair , in the United Kingdom Chaucer Island ) is a 1.5 km long island in the Wilhelm Archipelago off the west coast of Graham Land on the Antarctic Peninsula . In the group of Wauwermans Islands , it is 2.5 km northeast of Reeve Island .
Argentine scientists mapped it in 1950. The island was named in 1956 after Enrique Sinclair (1805-1904), a New York City- born protagonist of the Argentine War of Independence. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names translated the name into English in 1965. The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee, however, named it in 1959 after the English poet Geoffrey Chaucer (1342 / 43-1400).
