The Sindicato do Norte primarily fights to control drug trafficking in northeastern Brazil ( Região Nordeste ).

history

It was founded on March 27, 2003 by separating from the Primeiro Comando da Capital (PCC, German First Capital Command ) from São Paulo with its own command structure.

In 2016, the ceasefire between the two largest drug cartels in Brazil, the Primeiro Comando da Capital and the Comando Vermelho (CV, German Red Command ) from Rio de Janeiro collapsed. Since then, the struggle for supremacy in the drug trade in northern Brazil has flared up again. The Sindicato do Crime do RN is considered an ally of the CV.

According to the Brazilian judiciary, at the beginning of 2017 around 200 to 300 of those detained in Brazilian prisons belonged to the Sindicato do Crime do RN .

Prison fights in Alcaçuz 2017

The Sindicato is fighting the Primeiro Comando da Capital, the largest criminal organization in the country with its headquarters in the capital São Paulo .

In mid-January 2017, brutal clashes broke out for over 14 hours in the Alcaçuz state prison in Nísia Floresta in northeastern Brazil. Sindicato do Norte members invaded the Primeiro Comando da Capital area inside the prison. The electricity was turned off before the conflict began. Therefore, the jammers that are supposed to prevent cell phone communication in and out of prison did not work. The fighting was supported by gang members outside the prison: Shortly before, men had approached the prison in a car and threw weapons over the wall, said the president of the prison officers' union.

At least 27 people died in the fighting. Most of the bodies were beheaded and mutilated. The military police entered the prison after 72 hours, heavily armed with armored vehicles. Alcaçuz detention center is designed for 620 prisoners and had at least 1,083 inmates in 2017.

While the government of the state of Rio Grande do Norte spoke of 27 fatalities, according to police investigators it could be over 30 dead.
