Symphony in D major (Cherubini)

The symphony in D major by Luigi Cherubini was composed in 1815 as a commission from the Royal Philharmonic Society , which had recently been founded , and remained Cherubini's only symphony . It is kept in a strictly classical form and was premiered on May 1, 1815 in London .

The symphony is divided into the four classical movements Largo - Allegro, Larghetto cantabile, Minuetto ( Allegro non tanto - Trio ) and Allegro assai . A performance lasts approximately 34 minutes.

Cherubini's second string quartet, which was composed in 1829, represents an extensive reworking of the symphony with a new second movement. In 1838, the composer wrote in an exchange of letters that he did not want to write any further symphonies, as he was not in competition with the symphonies of Mozart , Haydn and Beethoven wish to kick.
