Sinohydro was founded in 1950 as a state-owned hydropower construction company and traded under the name China National Water Resources and Hydropower Engineering Corporation . In 2011, Sinohydro became a brand of the state-owned Power Construction Corporation of China (Powerchina), which was ranked 182nd in the Fortune Global 500 list of top-selling companies in 2018 .

Today, in addition to the core business of hydraulic and power station construction, the company also offers the construction of roads, bridges, factories, airports and other buildings. It also develops and manages real estate and finances infrastructure projects.

Sinohydro is working on projects in 80 different countries in Asia , Africa and America (as of 2019).
