Sinowi Markowitsch Birnow

Sinowi Markowitsch Birnow ( Russian Зиновий Маркович Бирнов ; born March 3, 1911 in Asweja , Vitebsk Governorate , today Belarus ; † May 2, 1967 in Volgograd ) was a well-known Soviet chess composer .

Life

In 1931 Birnow finished his studies at the Moscow Technical College for Construction. As a civil engineer, he was awarded a certificate of honor for his services to the reconstruction of Stalingrad, which had been destroyed by the war. Birnov commemorative tournaments are held regularly in Volgograd in memory of their compatriot.

Chess composition

Birnow composed a few dozen chess problems and more than 150 chess studies, some of which took top places in tournaments. His favorite subjects were mate and positional draw . His best studies demonstrate lively, engaging, and astute play on both sides.

Birnov was a master of sports of the USSR.
