Sisinnius, depiction in the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls

Sisinnius (* in Syria ; † February 4, 708 ) was probably elected Pope around January 15, 708 and died of a serious illness only three weeks later .

Sisinnius was probably born in Syria as the son of John; his exact place of birth is unknown.

Little is known about him: he was enthroned on January 18, 708 after a sedis vacancy of 89 days. It is said that he was so seriously ill that he could not even eat himself. Nevertheless, Sisinnius is said to have tried to exercise his papacy as well as possible. All that is known about his actual official acts is that he gave orders to prepare limestone for the repair of the walls of Rome and that shortly before his death he blessed a Corsican bishop. He was buried in St. Peter's Basilica .
