The film shows a group of African Americans who moved to southern Israel in 1969 to start a polygamous Israelite community there. The members of these communities came to be known as Hebrew Israelites , who only believe in the law of the Torah and who practice polygamy as in biblical times .

The film premiered in July 2000 in Israel at the Jerusalem Film Festival and in October 2001 in the United States at the Chicago International Film Festival , where it was nominated for a Gold Hugo .
