Sitson Ma

Sitson Ma ( Chinese  馬思聰  /  马思聪 , Pinyin Mǎ Sicōng , born May 7, 1912 in Haifeng , Guangdong ; † May 20, 1987 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , United States ) was a Chinese violin virtuoso and composer.

Sitson Ma studied at the Nancy Conservatory and took violin lessons in Paris . In 1931 he returned to China, where he worked as a violinist and founded a music school in Guangzhou . In 1937 he became a professor at the University of Canton. After the Second World War he was a music teacher and conductor in Shanghai , Taipei , Tianjin and Beijing . As a result of the Cultural Revolution , he emigrated to the USA in 1967 .

He composed two symphonies and a symphonic poem , a violin concerto , chamber music works, including a Mongolian and a Tibetan suite for piano and violin, three cantatas , folk songs for a cappella choir and several song cycles.
