Sixto Escobar

Sixto Escobar (* 12. March 1913 in Barceloneta , Puerto Rico ; † 17th November 1979 ) was a Puerto Rican boxer in the bantamweight .

Professional career

In 1930 he started his career successfully. On August 7, 1935, he boxed against Pete Sanstol for the NBA World Championship and won by unanimous decision. He lost this belt, however, in his first title defense on the 26th of the same month to Lou Salica by majority decision. Escobar defeated Salica in a direct rematch on November 15 of the same year on points and thus conquered the world championship belts of the NBA and NYSAC associations . He held both titles until September 23, 1937.

He also won the universal world title on February 20, 1938, when he defeated Harry Jeffra by a unanimous judge's decision. He held this title until October 1939.

In 1940 he ended his career.

In 2002 he was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame .
