The Type 38 12 cm Howitzer ( Japanese 式 十二 糎 榴 弾 砲 , Sanhachi-shiki jūni-senchi ryūdanhō ) was a howitzer that was used by the Imperial Japanese Army in World War I , the Second Sino-Japanese War , and in the Japanese Soviet border conflict and was used during the Pacific War from 1911 to 1945. The designation Type 38 indicates the year of development, the 38th year of the rule of Emperor Meiji or 1905 according to the Gregorian calendar.
history
Although the Type 38 was introduced back in 1911, it was still in service in the 1940s, although hopelessly out of date. During the battle of Iwojima , the Japanese defenders used some Type 38 howitzers, probably due to a lack of adequate artillery . The Type 38 had a strikingly short tube that was 1.32 m (caliber L / 11) long, a box carriage and wooden wheels. The howitzer could fire high-explosive, armor-piercing and shrapnel shells.
