history

A Type 31 mountain gun, dismantled into individual parts on horses, with its Japanese gun operation.

The Type 31 75mm mountain gun was designed by Lieutenant General Arisaka Nariakira in 1898 . Type 31 refers to the year of origin, which was the 31st year of the reign of Emperor Meiji . The gun was manufactured in the Osaka arsenal and was the standard gun used by the Japanese army in the Russo-Japanese War alongside the 75 mm Type 31 field gun . It was used in the 5th , 7th , 8th , 9th , 10th , 11th and 12th divisions . An artillery regiment was assigned to each division . This consisted of two battalions , each with three batteries , each with six guns, i.e. 36 guns per regiment .

Due to a lack of alternatives, the Type 31 remained in service until the end of the Second World War, despite its outdated technology .

description

A major disadvantage compared to the Russian guns in the Type 31 75 mm mountain gun was the lack of a recoil mechanism. After each fire, the gun bounced back and had to be realigned. This reduced the rate of fire to two to three shots per minute. The gun barrel was made of steel and fired low-smoke 6 kg high explosive or shrapnel shells. The effective range was approx. 4300 meters. As is usual with mountain guns, the Type 31 mountain gun could be dismantled into individual parts and loaded onto horses (see picture above left).
