Professor Rotem Kowner

Rotem Kowner (born July 11, 1960 in Mikhmoret ) is an Israeli historian and psychologist who specializes in the history of Japan during the Meiji period and the Russo-Japanese War . He is a professor at the University of Haifa in the field of Asian studies .

Life

Rotem Kowner was born on July 11, 1960 in Kibbutz Mikhmoret and spent his first years there. His family moved to Haifa , where he grew up and went to school. He then went to the Israeli Navy and served on a missile speedboat .

After graduating in East Asian Studies and Psychology from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem , he received a scholarship from the Japanese Ministry of Education and studied in Japan for six years . After completing his Ph.D. from Tsukuba University , he continued his studies at the Center for East Asian Studies at Stanford University and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. In 1998 he began teaching as a Senior Lecturer at Haifa University and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2004.

In 2004, Kowner co-organized the international conference The Russo-Japanese War and the 20th Century: An Assessment from a Centennial Perspective (German: The Russo-Japanese War and the 20th Century: Insights 100 Years Later), which took place in Israel . He has published several books and articles on these subjects.

In 2013, Kowner received a professorship . He is visiting professor at Waseda University in Tokyo and at the University of Geneva . Kowner is a member of several international journals. He is currently Head of the Liberal Arts Program at Haifa University and a member of the University Senate, Board of Governors and Executive Committee.

Kowner is married and has three daughters and one son.
