The Type 11 37 mm infantry gun ( Japanese 十 一年 式 平 射 歩 兵 砲 , Jūichinen-shiki heisha Hoheihō ) was an infantry gun that was used by the Imperial Japanese Army in the Second Sino-Japanese War , the Japanese-Soviet border conflict and during the Pacific War was used from 1922 to 1945. The designation Type 11 indicates the year the troops were introduced, the 11th year of Emperor Taishō's rule or 1922 according to the Gregorian calendar.
history
When the Type 11 was introduced in 1922, the gun was a contemporary infantry gun. With a weight of 89 kg it was relatively light and could be carried by four men on four carrying bars. Another six men completed the gun team and carried ammunition. One area of responsibility was fighting enemy machine gun positions. The Type 11 was also intended for anti-tank defense, but it soon became apparent that the penetration power with such a low muzzle velocity was no longer sufficient to pose a threat to allied light tanks of the M3 Stuart type .
In 1934 the Type 11 was to be replaced by the Type 94 37 mm gun , which had a higher muzzle velocity. Due to a lack of alternatives, the Type 11 remained in service in some units until the end of the war in 1945.
