The Type 96 15-cm howitzer ( Japanese 九六 式 十五 糎 榴 弾 砲 , Kyūroku-shiki jūgo-senchi ryūdanhō ) was a Japanese howitzer of World War II . It was the main weapon of the Japanese army's heavy artillery , first used in 1937 in the Second Sino-Japanese War . 440 guns were made, a very small number compared to western standards.
In contrast to older Japanese guns, the Type 96 was designed for transport by power train. The steel spoked wheels had solid rubber tires. On the two spreader bars were devices for vehicle transport. These spreader bars gave the gun sufficient stability. Two earth spades absorbed the recoil.
