history
In 1936 the Type 96 150 mm infantry mortar was introduced to replace the Type 93 150 mm infantry mortar . Due to its heavy weight of 722 kg, the mortar was a cumbersome weapon and was mostly mounted in fixed positions. With the introduction of the Type 97 150 mm infantry mortar , the weight was reduced by half. During the Battle of Okinawa , some Type 96s were captured by US Marines . Around 90 copies of the Type 96 mortar were made.
