The 80 mm type 3 anti-aircraft gun was developed in 1914 on behalf of the Imperial Japanese Navy and was mainly used on their warships . In the course of the Pacific War , however, the Type 3 was also used for coastal and naval base defense by the naval ground forces on land. Most of the Type 3s mounted on warships were replaced by 12.7 cm Type 89 anti-aircraft guns and 25 mm Type 96 anti-aircraft guns in the 1930s .

The Type 3 flak remained in service until the end of the war in 1945.

On the ships, the flak was mostly mounted on a permanently installed column, so that its lateral directional range was 360 °. It had a one-piece pipe and a hydropneumatic pipe return arranged above the pipe . The semi-vertically sliding screw cap was operated by hand (and not automatically). The handwheel for height adjustment was on the left. The horizontal adjustment was made with another handwheel on the right side of the gun.
