The Type 99 10 cm mountain gun ( Japanese 九九 式 十 糎 山砲 , Kyūkyū-shiki jū-senchi yamahō ) was a mountain gun that was used by the Imperial Japanese Army in the Second Sino-Japanese War and during the Pacific War from 1939 to 1945 has been. The designation Type 99 indicates the year of development, the year Kōki 2599 or 1939 according to the Gregorian calendar.

history

The Type 99 was the successor to the Type 94 75 mm mountain gun, which was produced in large numbers by Japanese standards . Although the Type 94 was a robust and popular gun, its shells lacked explosive power due to the 75 mm caliber. For this reason, a mountain gun with a caliber of 105 mm was developed in 1938, officially accepted into the troops in 1939 and produced by the Osaka Arsenal from 1940 . A special feature of the Type 99 was its low weight. Compared to guns of the same caliber such as For example, the Type 91 10 cm howitzer , which weighed 1500 kg, the Type 99 only weighed 830 kg. The weight reduction was achieved by using the special type 100 light HE grenade (HE = High Explosive ), which used a three-part propellant charge . Overall, the grenade including the propellant charge weighed 12.6 kg, compared to the Type 94 grenade, which weighed 6.4 kg, almost twice as heavy. The Type 99 could be easily and quickly dismantled into several parts and could be transported by seven or ten pack animals, but had a short range of approx. 5500 meters, which severely restricted its possible uses. Only 132 pieces of the Type 99 were produced. An unusual spar (in the shape of a tuning fork ), at the end of which was a ground spur , gave the gun stability when firing. The metal shield attached for protection was 3 mm thick.

The Type 99 remained in service until the end of the war in 1945.
