A Type 98 20 mm anti-aircraft automatic cannon in the firing position

The Type 98 20 mm anti-aircraft automatic cannon was one of the most widely used anti-aircraft cannons in the Imperial Japanese Army, with 2,500 units produced. About 80% of the light anti-aircraft guns fell on the 20 mm FlaMK Type 98. The first combat mission took place at Nomonhan. It was in use until the end of the war. With a muzzle velocity of 950 m / s, it was able to fight horizontal targets up to a maximum range of 5500 meters, with the effective combat range being smaller.

For air defense, the Type 98 fired the highly explosive Type 100 tracer . This ammunition could also be used for fighting infantry. The armor- piercing tracer ammunition Type 100 with a weight of 162 grams was fired for anti-tank combat. The complete cartridge weighed 431 grams.
