The Type 38 10 cm cannon ( Japanese 三八 式 十 糎 加農砲 , Sanhachi-shiki jissenchi kanonhō ) was a field gun used by the Imperial Japanese Army in World War I , Second Sino-Japanese War , in the Japanese-Soviet border conflict and during of the Pacific War from 1911 to 1945. The designation Type 38 indicates the year the troops were introduced, the 38th year of the rule of Emperor Meiji or 1905 according to the Gregorian calendar.
history
In 1905 the Imperial Japanese Army ordered 10 cm Krupp guns from the German company Krupp with the requirement that they could manufacture them under license in Japan . The breech of the gun was changed to an interrupted screw lock at the request of the Japanese . The gun was given the designation Type 38 10 cm cannon, although the exact caliber was 105 mm. Krupp delivered at least 20, possibly up to 50 guns from the German Empire to the Japanese Empire. After arriving in Japan, the gun was further modified by Japanese engineers to adapt the production to domestic industry. The height and weight of the carriage have been reduced. The maximum elevation range has been increased and the recoil mechanism has been simplified. The biggest change was made to the pipe cradle , which ran almost to the mouth of the pipe.
The exact number of Type 38 guns manufactured by the Osaka Arsenal is not known, but it may have been a few hundred.
The Type 38 10 cm cannon was used in World War I during the Siege of Tsingtau . After the First World War, the cannon barrel was extended and the maximum barrel elevation increased again. In the first years of the Second Sino-Japanese War, the Type 38 was still used in the fighting force, but by the beginning of the Pacific War it was hopelessly out of date. The remaining guns were handed over to the coastal defense .
It is not known that there are extant specimens of the Type 38 cannon.
