The Type 4 15 cm Howitzer ( Japanese 四年 式 十五 糎 榴 弾 砲 , Yo-nenshiki jūgo-senchi ryūdanhō ) was a howitzer that was used by the Imperial Japanese Army in the Second Sino-Japanese War , the Japanese-Soviet border conflict and was used during the Pacific War from 1915 to 1945. The designation type 4 indicates the year of the introduction of the troops, the 4th year of the reign of Emperor Taishō or 1915 according to the Gregorian calendar.
history
The Type 4 Howitzer was introduced into the Imperial Japanese Army in 1915. Their design was based on the Type 38 10 cm cannon , which, however, was too heavy to be transported by horse and cart. For this reason, when developing the Type 4, care was taken to easily dismantle the howitzer in order to pull the gun barrel and gun carriage separately from six draft animals each.
Although the howitzer was already obsolete by the end of the 1930s, it remained in service until the end of the war in 1945 due to a lack of howitzers and guns. A total of 280 examples of the Type 4 15 cm howitzer were produced.
