The Piața Plevnei is a place in the Timișoara district of Elisabetin . It originated in Hungarian times as Dózsa tér , named after the peasant leader György Dózsa , and received its current name in 1919 as a result of the annexation of the Banat to Romania . Names factor here is the battle of Pleven ( Romanian Plevna ) in the year. 1877
description
The rectangular square is bordered in the north by Strada General Henri Berthelot and in the south by Strada Mețianu - formerly Strada Brașov - and Strada Remus also joins it. Inside, the Parcul Gheorghe Doja extends a little deeper than the surrounding streets .
Initially, the square, which in the 18th century was still in the open between the inner city on the one hand and Josefstadt or Elisabethstadt on the other, was used as a wood storage area. Later it was used temporarily as a pig market , which is why it was also called Disznóvásár tér ( Hungarian for pig place ). The area was part of the esplanade and was not allowed to be built on until it was demolished in 1892.
In 1903, in the course of the expansion of the Elisabetin district at the beginning of the 19th century, today's Wilhelminian style ensemble with the slightly lower park in the middle of the square was created.
