The Sjøbotnen (Norwegian for sea boiler ) is a distinctive mountain basin in Queen Maud Land in East Antarctica . In the Wohlthat massif, it is located immediately east of the Zimmermannberg on the north side of the Otto von Gruber Mountains .
The cauldron was discovered and mapped using aerial photographs during the German Antarctic Expedition (1938–1939) under the direction of Alfred Ritscher . Norwegian cartographers, who also named it, mapped it on the basis of aerial photographs and measurements of the Third Norwegian Antarctic Expedition (1956–1960).
