Scamandros
The Scamander , also known as the Scamander , is an ancient river in the Troas region in Asia Minor . Today the river Karamenderes is called Çayı .
It rises in the Ida Mountains and flows north of Kumkale into the Dardanelles . On its bank lies the archaeological site of Troy and a little closer to the mouth of the prehistoric settlement hill Kumtepe .
In the Iliad of Homer , Skamandros is the river name among the people; the gods call it Xanthos. In Greek mythology he is personified by the river god of the same name . This is a son of Oceanus and Tethys . As the father of the Teukros and the Strymo , he became the progenitor of the Trojans.
