The Evangelical Lutheran Skien kirke is a neo-Gothic church in the Norwegian town of Skien from 1894. It is the main church of the provost of Skien .

history

Skien's former Christian church on today's market square was destroyed by a large fire in 1886. Until it was rebuilt, a wooden church was built in the Marenso district , which was later used as a schoolhouse. On March 31, 2011, the school building was demolished.

With the prospect that Skien would become a bishopric , the Skien kirke was designed as a cathedral . During the Second World War Quisling's occupation government restructured the church organs and the Skien kirke was called the cathedral church until the end of the war. After that, the old geographical church order was reintroduced and Skien did not become a bishopric.

The architect Hagbarth Martin Schytte-Berg , a student of the German architects Johannes Vollmer and Johannes Otzen , designed the church. It has 1200 seats, a length of 47 m, a tower height of 68 m and an interior height of 17 m. On August 31, 1894, it was inaugurated by Kristiansand's Bishop Johan Christian Heuch .

The organ in the Skien kirke is one of the largest in Norway with 5000  pipes . The original organ was built by Olsen & Jørgensens orgelfabrikk in Oslo in 1894 . This was replaced in 1954 by a new one from JH Jørgensens orgelfabrikk , which was later rebuilt and modernized.

Architectural style

The Skien kirke is a combination of neo-Gothic pointed arches and round arches borrowed from the Romanesque . In the gallery and the side aisles there are round arches, while the upper part of the transept and the choir arches are designed in pointed arches. The decor of the church is mainly characterized by the ornaments on the ceiling and walls and stained glass , which is located in the choir , the baptistery, the main and the transept.
