Skynet 5D is a military communications satellite of the British Ministry of Defense of the Skynet 5 series. It is the last of the four satellites belonging to this series.
It was put into geostationary orbit on December 19, 2012 at 21:49 UTC with an Ariane 5 ECA from the Center Spatial Guyanais in Kourou together with Mexsat Bicentenario .
The three-axis stabilized satellite with X-band - transponders and UHF equipped -Communications and is intended to allow the position 53 degrees East an encrypted and secure against interference military voice and data communications. By increasing the fuel capacity, Skynet 5D can perform position change maneuvers more frequently. It was based on the satellite bus euro E3000 by Astrium built and has a design life of 15 years.
