Slade Castle ( Irish Caisleán to tSlaoid ) is the ruin of a tower house in the village of Slade near the Hook Head in the Irish County Wexford . It is considered a national monument .

history

The original fort was built by the Laffin (or Laffan ) family in the late 15th century. A fortified two-story hall was added in the 16th century, as were the battlements . The Laffins' lands were quite small, only 86 acres. This suggests that there must have been other sources of income, such as fishing or trade, to keep the castle going.

The Laffins lost Slade Castle after the Irish Rebellion of 1641 . It then served as a warehouse for the salt works until the 19th century, when the castle was converted into a tenement house. When the Office of Public Works took over Slade Castle in the 1940s, the castle was returned to its old state.

description

Another view of the castle with many loopholes

The oldest part of the castle is the four-story tower. The ground floor and the second floor have vaulted ceilings . The parapet on the roof has Irish battlements . From there you have a nice view of Bannow Bay and Waterford Harbor , which was important for the defense. The entrance to the castle is through a Machicolation protected and a murderer hole. An open fireplace and a toilet bay have been preserved on the 1st floor. The three rooms on the ground floor cannot be reached from the living rooms above and probably served as storage rooms.

The hall is two stories high; their entrance is protected by another killer hole. There is a large, open fireplace at its western end and a dungeon in the southern wall . A staircase in the wall leads to the upper floors.
