A group of islands belonging to the Scottish archipelago of the Inner Hebrides is referred to as the Slate Islands ( German "Schieferinseln" ) . The archipelago was named after on some islands in the past intensively mined shale ( English "Slate" ).
geography
The Slate Islands are located just off the west coast of Scotland in the mouth of the Firth of Lorn . The archipelago lies around 5 km northeast of Jura and 10 km southeast of Mull . The Slate Islands include - in addition to numerous stacs and skerries - the following islands:

Five islands are inhabited. More than half of the population lives on rope, which is connected to mainland Scotland by the Clachan Bridge . Important places in the archipelago are Ellenabeich on Seil and Cullipool on Luing.
