Slavomil Vencl

Slavomil Vencl (born October 18, 1936 in Dlouhá Třebová / Langentriebe in Eastern Bohemia ; † June 23, 2019 ) was a Czech archaeologist .

Vencl studied archeology at the Charles University in Prague from 1954 to 1959 , where he received his doctorate in 1968. In 1959 he worked in the National Museum there , but moved to the Institute of Archeology that same year. From 1979 to 2002 he held various chairs, including in France and Great Britain, and from 1998 to 2001 was a lecturer at the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen .

His original focus was on the Neolithic and the Copper Age , but he increasingly turned to the Palaeolithic and Mesolithic . He became internationally known for his ultimately rejected dating of the oldest tool find in the Czech Republic at the Beroun motorway site and for his overview of the prehistory of Bohemia.

Vencl was editor of the journals Výzkumy v Čechách (1968–1970) and Archeologické rozhledy (1973–1985). From 1998 he was a member of the Učené společnosti České republiky , the learned society of the Czech Republic .

His wife was the archaeologist Natalie Venclova .
